INDUSTRIAL SAFETY, OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH AND ENVIRONMENT
Industrial Occupational Health and Safety During fiscal year 2009, Hidroeléctrica Boliviana S.A. emphasized the area of occupational health and safety and offered courses to the staff on different topics, and it also carried out voluntary testing procedures at the staff level.
In relation to the AH1N1 influenza virus, Hidroeléctrica Boliviana S.A. developed an Action Plan to prevent the contagion, incorporating it to the corporate culture, in compliance with the recommendations issued by the World Health Organization (WHO).
The Study of Noise Emissions was updated, and as a result thereof, noise levels issued at the different worksites and the project’s area of influence, are below the maximum level permitted by national and international legislation. Moreover, it was included within a program aimed at preserving the hearing ability of the staff involved in activities that expose them to persistent or relatively intense noise levels. With respect to Industrial Safety, signs were added and refurbished for autonomous respirator equipment, meeting points, emergency exits, color codes and bridges.
A number of procedures were developed and implemented for any disruption of the Fire Protection Systems.
Compliance with Safety, Health and Environmental standards were enforced in the design and construction of the new warehouses.
Likewise, in adherence to legal rules, a new Safety, Health and Environment (SSMA) Mixed Committee was established, which shall continue ensuring compliance with labor-related, and environmental legislation and will provide support for the development of Hidroeléctrica Boliviana S.A.’s Integrated Management System.
Finally, thanks to the work that was carried out and the ongoing development of the Integrated
Management System, Hidroeléctrica Boliviana S.A. did not experience any personnel or environmental incidents during 2009.

HB ‘s Integrated Management System is audited on an annual basis by NOSA CERTIFICATION AUTHORITY (NCA), having obtained for this year a Five Star rating over a possible total of Five.
Within the framework of the continuous improvement process, the temporary solid waste disposal facility was upgraded and equipped to improve the management thereof.
Hidroeléctrica Boliviana S.A., carried out Environmental Monitoring activities, on a bi-annual basis, both at the Taquesi River Hydroelectric Complex as well as at the four seasonal reservoirs, in order to monitor and control the implementation of the mitigation and prevention measures proposed in the Prevention and Mitigation Program (PMP) for each activity. It carried out field visits, which in conjunction with the inspections, measurements and evaluations, allowed establishing full compliance with the proposed measures and the conservation of environmental quality, and above all, water resources throughout the project’s entire area of influence.
Concerning the contribution of the Hydroelectric Complex to combat climate change, it is estimated that between the commercial operation date and December 2009, the Taquesi
Complex prevented the emission of over 1,150,000 tCO2-e (tons of carbon dioxide equivalent) into the atmosphere.
